I live in California, but I'm going to college at SDSU which is located two hours away from the town I've lived in my entire life. The campus shelters over 35,000 students, so in many ways, my situation is or would be similar to yours.

You see it with people at home--people who don't make the effort to go out and make friends in school; they're lonely and they don't know what to do with themselves without fellowship. You just have to put yourself out there, somehow. A church fellowship isn't the only type of community one can join. And you can totally get to know co-workers outside of work. You decide how deep your relationships go. Just be open to people, that's all :)
